The first edition of the Asian Youth Games was held in Singapore in 2009 involving 43 countries with 9 sporting events competed.
At the inaugural edition of the Games, Malaysia, represented by 79 athletes, participated in 8 types of sports.
In the 2nd edition held in Nanjing, China in 2013, Malaysia which listed 69 athletes participated in 11 types of sports and managed to win 4 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals thus finishing the competition in 8th place overall.
Sri Lanka was given the right to organize the 3rd edition of the temaysa which was supposed to take place in 2017, but was left to Indonesia to organize the games before the organization was canceled by the Asian Olympic Council (OCA).
